Panousis helps Virginia Tech stun No. 8 Lady Vols 57-43
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Vanessa Panousis scored 21 points and shot 5 of 8 from 3-point range as Virginia Tech continued its fast start with a 57-43 upset of No. 8 Tennessee on Sunday.
Regan Magarity added 13 points and the Hokies (7-1) closed the game on a 13-0 run.
Virginia Tech went 12-20 and won just one Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season game last year.
Tennessee (6-2) missed 13 of its final 14 field-goal attempts, including each of the last 10. The 43 points were the lowest single-game total in program history. The previous low came in a 72-44 loss to Notre Dame on Jan. 23, 2012.
Diamond DeShields scored 15 points for Tennessee, all in the first half. Mercedes Russell added 14 points and a career-high 15 rebounds.
Tennessee had won its last 44 home games against unranked foes since falling 72-71 to Arkansas in overtime on Feb. 23, 2012.
