New mixed income housing that broke ground on Monday on the Chattanooga Westside.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- The next phase of the Chattanooga Westside redevelopment broke ground Monday morning.

Phase two of One Westside will feature mixed income housing adjacent to the Gateway Towers.

There are seven planned phases to modernize that neighborhood, which currently has housing projects that have been around as long ago as 1940.

These new units, funded both locally and with federal dollars, aims to increase affordable housing stock in downtown Chattanooga while increasing the quality of life on the Westside.

Chattanooga city councilwoman Raquetta Dotley said, “(This project) is about ensuring that longtime residents are not displaced, but if they are able to benefit from the progress happening around them, and through them. A lot of times, in our communities, people come for our data, come and get all these things and then they push us out of the neighborhood, but this project has made sure that people can stay right here on the Westside.”

Phase One, the reconstruction of the James A. Henry Building, which will feature over a hundred Head Start seats, is expected to be completed within the next few months.
