Plans for new Chattanooga safe house expected to help prostitutes change their lives

CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) – Collaboration between local ministries and Chattanooga State will soon lead to construction of a safe house for women looking to get out of prostitution.

A group of students at Chattanooga who took part in designing the safe house recently released an architectural rendering of what it would look like. Chatt state student, Rob Ament told News 12 it was a group effort that took several weeks to complete.

“We had 20 different drawings that we had to do, and it was hard to correlate that with everybody. It all came together very nicely, and I think we got a very nice result,” Ament said.

Love’s Arm Outreach Ministries Board Member Donna Tigar stood proudly in front of the rending after it was presented. Tigar said the 3000 square foot facility will be a place where women looking to get out of prostitution can receive medical attention along with counseling as they begin a journey on a new path in life.

“Just being able to get this close to being able to help women who are looking for an alternative to being on the street but don’t have a safe place to go is just a real blessing,” Tigar said.

An hour before the rendering was made public, News 12 spoke to a former prostitute who spent 30 years on the streets. She’s turned her life around thanks to a ministry program similar to the one that will operate out of the new safe house. Given safety concerns connected to her former life, News 12 is not identifying her by name. She told News 12 the new safe house is something that is strongly needed in Chattanooga.

“There are a lot of girls out there that absolutely are living in fear. I hated myself. I was scared to death. They’re scared also, but they don’t know what else to do. A lot of them are uneducated. The safe house will help them with education and help them start their whole life back over,” she said.

Now that an architectural rendering of the safe house is complete, the next step is actual construction. Once that’s all done, women looking for a way out of prostitution can look forward to a new lease on life. Due to safety concerns for many women looking to get out of prostitution, the exact location of the safe house will be built has not been disclosed.

If anyone is interested in the program or knows a woman who desperately needs help getting off the streets, they can log onto the Love’s Arm Outreach Ministries website.
