Plastic Omnium Breaks Ground on Chattanooga Plant
Plastic Omnium, the latest major supplier for the Volkswagen plant, broke ground on its Chattanooga operation.
Plastic Omnium will produce automobile exterior components such as bumpers and fenders
Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger, says, " It doesn’t seem like it was that long ago, but 6 years ago when Volkswagen actually began building the site that we’re close to today, there was a lot of excitement, and that excitement certainly continues today."
The fast moving project will bring about 180 jobs immediately; 300 within three years.
However, Hamilton County Mayor Jim Coppinger says he’s even more exited about another investment, an investment into local students.
Mayor Coppinger adds, "As a result of this project, over the next ten years, there will be two million dollars that will go into our public school system."
Partnerships with UTC and Chattanooga State will bring local graduates on board.
Representative Gerald McCormick says it’s also important at the state level to make investments like these
Representative McCormick adds, "We’re making investments in the industries where were actually making things, we’re manufacturing products, not just providing services, and that’s really the basis of wealth."
Representative McCormick makes another bold statement.
He says there’s a manufacturing renaissance going on in this country, and he thinks Chattanooga and Tennessee are leading that renaissance.
Plastic Omnium will invest $65 million into the community.
They hope to finish construction by next year.
