Plenty of Question Marks For Kirby Smart’s First Season at Georgia
Kirby Smart won four national titles serving on Alabama’s coaching staff.
And now Georgia hopes Smart can establish that kind of legacy in Athens.
Smart discussed life as the Dawgs new head coach at SEC Media Days.
Kirby Smart doesn’t mind the bright lights of SEC media days.
He knows he’s lucky for his first head coaching job to come at a place like Georgia.
Said Smart-“I’m at a great place. Not many great, great jobs out there, and I got one. So I’m excited about it. Going to make the most of it.”
It’s exciting all right, until Smart tries to pencil in his lineup.
Said Smart-“There are question marks all around this team in my opinion. There’s not job safe. We want that competition.”
Take quarterback, where a true freshman could start in Jacob Eason.
Reporter-“If you had to start a freshman quarterback, how difficult is that for a freshman quarterback to win in this league?”
Said Smart-“I’ve always said the SEC was a defensive league. When you look at the top ten offenses and defenses in the country, we usually have more defenses than offenses. It’s tough on them. It’s tough on any quarterback, but it’s really tough on a true freshman.”
Reporter-“Coach, you lost a lot of talent on the front seven of the defense, especially at linebacker. How do you expect to replace that next season?”
Said Smart-“Right now I’m praying. I’ll be honest with you, I’m scared. The part for everybody that’s misleading is how good the pass defense was last year at the University of Georgia.”
Smart is praying that injured running backs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel will get healthy too.
Those guys will give Georgia a better chance of making their fans happy.
Said tight end Jeb Blazevich-“I think fans expect a lot. You can see that from our spring game. We had 93,000. We have players. We’re all working hard, but the real problem is we have to go out and beat everybody else that has players working hard. That’s the challenge, and we’re up for it. We’re just excited to play in such a cool venue that is the SEC East.”
