Police investigate decomposed body found by inmates

SEQUATCHIE COUNTY, Tenn. (WDEF) – Police are investigating an area on Highway 111 where a decomposed body was found early Thursday afternoon.

Female state prisoners came across the body while picking up trash along the highway.

The body has been severely decomposed, making it almost unrecognizable.

Inmates state the area was cleaned about a month ago, and there was no sign of a body in the area at that time. This leads investigators to believe that the body has been dumped since the last clean on March 1.

Sheriff Ronnie Hitchcock confirms that there are no current reports for a missing person in Sequatchie County. “We know March 1 they picked up litter and there wasn’t a body here, same people. We don’t have anybody in our area that has been reported missing. We are still in the early stages of the investigation.”

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation are taking over the case and the body has been taken to a crime lab in Nashville.

Authorities have not released whether the body is male or female.

News 12 will provide updates to this developing story as soon as they become available.
