Police Urge Caution for New Year’s Celebrations

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- At today’s press conference, Chattanooga Police urged the public to ring in the New Year responsibly. Their focus was on encouraging those who go out to celebrate to have designated drivers or use a rideshare service.

They also have a warning for those who like to ring in the New Year with a bang.

Chattanooga Assistant Police Chief Glenn Scruggs said, “This time of year, we experience a lot of random gunfire during the New Year’s celebration, we’re asking that people refrain from firing guns in the air in celebration. Not only is that unsafe, it’s illegal. You know this time last year I want to say we had a person shoot out at a transformer, which caused some power outages.”

They say that if you must shoot something off, please use fireworks instead.
