Real ID deadline pushed back 2 years

It was scheduled for May of 2023

WASHINGTON D.C. (WDEF) – We’ve seen several deadlines come and go for getting the REAL ID.

Today, the deadline was pushed back again.

We had just crossed the sixth month warning for when the federal government would begin requiring the national ID card.

But today, the Secretary of Homeland Security pushed it back an entire two more years.

The new deadline is May 7, 2025.

Sec. Mayorkas says the new delay will give states more time to make their own driver’s licenses and identification cards meet the security standards for the REAL ID.

The national ID is meant to increase U.S. Security.

“Beginning May 7, 2025, anyone boarding a U.S. commercial flight, entering a nuclear facility, military bases, or certain federal buildings must have a REAL ID-compliant license or acceptable identification.”

The move to a REAL ID, began in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks in 2001.

Part of the 9/11 Commission report recommended a more secure form of identification for the U.S.

“Secure identification should begin in the United States. The federal government should set standards for the issuance of birth certificates and sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.  Fraud in identification document is no longer just a problem of theft.  At many entry points to vulnerable facilities, including gates for boarding aircraft, sources of identification are the last opportunity to ensure that people are who they say they are and to check whether they are terrorists.”

The Real ID Act of 2005 got the ball rolling. States were given to 2008 to meet the goals to make their licenses comply with the REAL ID. The deadlines were pushed back in 2009, 2011, 2013 and then several times during the pandemic.

It is worth noting, that both Tennessee and Georgia were among the first 16 states that were compliant.

Tennessee began issuing REAL ID compliant credentials July 1, 2019.

By federal law, you will have to go to a Driver Services Center in person to get a REAL ID.
