Red Bank Lions hunting for district win

RED BANK, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Red Bank boys are prepping for a district deciding game against East Hamilton Friday night. The Lions are working on the best record in the last ten years.

“We want Red Bank mentioned, not just with the football program here, but ‘Hey, they got a legit basketball program, too,'” said Nick Fike, who’s coached the Lions for eight years.

Red Bank has dominated opponents all season. Fourteen of the Lions’ 17 wins have come by double digits.

“We’ve gotten better and better every year with us leading to the success of this season,” Fike said. “Got some unselfish guys and really play for each other, and you can see that when they’re out on the court.”

“One through five, everyone can shoot out on the court,” point guard Nick Smith said. “We play at a fast pace. We all like playing defense.”

“We believe firmly that defense is a constant, and offense is a variable,” point guard Kris Clay said. “Offense isn’t always going to be there, but we can always go out and shut the other team down. We’ve held teams to 40 points, 50 points all season long. Especially once we get the offensive end going, it’s going to be a rough night for the other team.”

Things were pretty rough for Red Bank just four years ago. The Lions had seven straight losing district records. Since 2018, there’s been progress. But this year, everything clicked.

“Last year, with COVID going on, we didn’t have the opportunity to know each other and love each other. But this year, we really bonded, and we really trust that we all want the same end goal,” Clay said.

“Every year has been a little bit more, a little bit more, a little bit more. It’s not an easy task, but I feel like we’re at that point now, at least the last couple years, where we can sustain. We’re going to be that competitive team night in, night out. You’re going to get a fight every night,” Fike said.

Red Bank’s only district loss was to top dog East Hamilton in forfeit. The Lions finally get their rematch Friday.

“We have a lot to prove because a lot of people were saying we were scared, so we have a lot to show,” Smith said.

“It gives us a lot of extra motivation. We want to be number one in a district, so we want this one real bad,” Clay said.
