Remembering Jimmy Carter’s legacy as he receives hospice care

PLAINS, Ga. (WDEF) — The 39th President, Jimmy Carter, is transitioning into end of life care, according to a release from the Carter Center. Carter will receive hospice care in his own home in Plains, Georgia.

“The work he did after he left the presidency is what many people will remember him for,” said Jim Hall. Hall is a Chattanooga man who helped run Jimmy Carter’s election campaign.

“His life should be a model for anybody that is interested in being classified a public servant,” Hall continued.

Carter dedicated his life to global advocacy.

He focused on human rights and public health.

“I don’t think you can say anything but nice things about President Carter,” said Hall.

Up until 2020, he and his wife Rosalynn took annual trips to build homes with Habitat for Humanity. He also taught Sunday school lessons for decades.

According to Hall, people from all over the Southeast would go to these lessons just to hear him speak. He said, “We’ve been blessed to have him in our lives, politically and otherwise, for so many years.”

The former president has been known as many things: a politician, a navy lieutenant, even a peanut farmer.

“Hopefully as we focus more on president carter, we’ll realize it’s important to bring back principal, dignity, and respect,” Hall said.

Jimmy Carter promoted peace, responsible democracy, and compassion for those less fortunate.
