Resident shoots gun at snake, Calhoun Schools go on lockdown

CALHOUN, Ga. (WDEF) — Calhoun City Schools in Georgia went on a lockdown on Thursday due to nearby gunfire. After investigation, authorities determined a resident near the schools was trying to kill a snake with a gun.

The gunshot went off just before 2:30 p.m. on April 18.

The school system said a local resident, who was adjacent to CPS/CES, was in their own backyard when they tried to kill a snake using a firearm.

“The sound of gunfire caused obvious alarm,” Calhoun school officials said in a social media post.

It resulted in a school-wide lockdown.

Calhoun police and other local agencies immediately responded to the event. They are addressing the actions of the individual, school officials stated.

The school was dismissed regularly on Thursday. Officials said there was no threat to student safety.
