Results of 2nd round of water tests in Hamilton County Schools

Schools test faucets and water fountains for lead- see the violations

UPDATE: The School System has corrected their original release, saying that Rivermont Elementary did not, in fact, have a water violation.

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Hamilton County School System has released the results from their water testing for lead in their schools.

State law requires the tests.

The latest tests were taken during spring break and completed at the end of the school year.

They reported on the first 24 schools in May (9 sources exceeded the limit).

The remaining 27 of the schools built before 1998 (added to the testing this year) were tested in the summer.

Of the 806 samples in that test, 12 water sources had lead levels above the state limit of 20 ppb.

As a result, all 12 were immediately removed from service. They will be repaired and retested.

There are no overall quality issues at any of the tested facilities.

Families will get emailed results from their kids schools.

“Hamilton County Schools is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for our students and staff,” said HCS Chief Operations Officer Dr. Robert Sharpe. “As a part of that commitment, we have held ourselves to stricter water testing standards than those required by the state, and we have worked to be transparent about our test results to school families and our community. Today’s release of our most recent test results is the latest step in that process.”

Lead generally gets into drinking water through aging pipes, faucets, fixtures and plumbing materials.  You can’t see it, smell it or taste it. The tests include every faucet and water fountain in a school or school building.
