The Salvation Army Is Asking For A Helping Hand

CHATTANOOGA, TENN. (WDEF) – As temperatures continue to drop, The Salvation Army is asking for your help.

The organization needs more volunteers, as they prepare to open overnight shelter for the fifth time this season.

With cold temperatures setting into the Tennessee Valley, the Salvation Army will remain open for overnight shelter.

“When it gets below freezing, um the health risks are greater for those in the homeless community, sometimes it’s even life threatening. So the Salvation Army once to make sure that we are there for the homeless community.”

But right now the organization’s budget is more than a little stretched, and red kettle donations are down this year, so they’re asking for help from those who can give their time this holiday season.

“Any of our volunteer opportunities, that’s ringing the bell, um that is helping us with our other Christmas activities, and helping us with the shelter. We need volunteers from six to midnight, and midnight to six. If you have some extra time on your hands, and want to give, now is the time.”

The emergency shelter will open at 7 o’clock, on Thursday and Friday night this week, at the Salvation Army’s Day Center located on McCallie Avenue.

“We can’t provide shelter without our volunteers, and if you’re watching and you are in need of shelter, the Salvation Army will open at 7 o’clock on Thursday evening and Friday evening. It’s a warm place, uh we have cots and blankets and again, could not provide any of this without the support of our wonderful community. So thank you if you’ve already given to the red kettles and if you haven’t, put a little extra this weekend as your out shopping please.”
