Salvation Army Hosts Super Bowl Party for ‘Unhoused Neighbors’

Chattanooga citizens join Salvation Army volunteers and workers for good food and good company

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – The Salvation Army hosted it’s annual super bowl viewing party for Chattanooga’s ‘unhoused population.’

From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. , the Salvation Army opened it’s doors to Chattanooga’s homeless and hungry neighbors.

“I think it has a wonderful impact because it gives them a sense of community. And because they are less fortunate and or homeless they don’t really get to watch cable television or even participate in super bowl activities so, we kind of want to do this so they can feel included in such a tradition around the country,” said Salvation Army volunteer special event coordinator, Shirliece Lundy.

Not only were they showing the super bowl for all to enjoy, but they were also serving an array of dinner options.

‘Back Road Boys BBQ’ donated some of the most loved football watching food to the event and that included things like pizza, nachos and buffalo chicken dip.

“Its good to see the smiles on their faces and they get to enjoy and watch the game and, you know, cheer on their favorite team,” said Lundy.

A few dozen people showed up to enjoy the festivities, and of course- cheer on their favorite teams.

“My father told me before he passed away “its not about the money you make but the difference you make with that money. So we try to live by that and make a difference with our money,” said Back Road Boys BBQ volunteer, Cameron Davis.

Although this watch party is slightly new to the area, this was not the Salvation Army’s first rodeo, but it’s fifth year hosting the event with fifteen volunteers to help.

“Because at any moment you could be homeless. At any moment, this could be us. So I’m trying to show my kids treat the people the way you want to be treated in return,” said Davis.
