Salvation Army in Heat Mode

Chattanooga (WDEF) – The Salvation Army is responding to this week’s heat with a fan campaign and by opening shelters.

The Day Center is open for the homeless.

Workers are handing out bottled water downtown.

And they are giving out box fans to low income residents.

“Close to 200 families have already been assisted with box fans,” states Area Commander, Major Algerome Newsome. “For now, we have enough fans to meet the need; however, we are dangerously low on utility assistance funds. The best way to help is with a monetary donation.”

If you know someone who needs a fan, call 423-756-1023.

If you need a cool drink of water, drop by the hydration station located at 800 McCallie Avenue between 9-5.

It will be open every day when the temperature passes the 90 degree mark.

If you can contribute, you can donate online at, call 1-900-Sal-Army or mail a donation marked  “Beat the Heat” and mailed to 822 McCallie Avenue, Chattanooga, TN 37403.
