Schools settle Ooltewah basketball hazing case
CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Hamilton County Department of Education releases the settlement details in the Ooltewah High basketball abuse case.
The department will pay the victim of the hazing case $750,000 for personal, physical and psychological injuries to resolve a lawsuit against them.
The player was abused by fellow players with a pool cue during a road game to Sevierville.
The deal was negotiated by Tennessee Risk Management Trust which is the insurance provider for the schools.
The insurance company pays the settlement, not the school system.
School officials stress that neither the school board nor school district took part in the settlement negotiations and didn’t learn the figure until it was settled this week.
A school representative wrote: “While everyone understands why this young man might want the settlement information to remain confidential, the board and the public have an interest in knowing how this claim was resolved.”
