Scramble Alley playground to be torn down
SODDY DAISY — The City of Soddy Daisy has announced the playground at Scramble Alley will be torn down.
They say the plan is for it to close no later than Monday, June 8th.
Soddy Daisy says they have applied for BCBST Playground Grant twice but have not been successful.
They are currently working to create a new Parks and Recreation Master Plan.
Their full statement reads:
“The day has come that a lot of us have dreaded. It is time to close and tear down the playground at Scramble Alley (the plan is to close it no later than Monday, June 8th). This playground has served the City for 30+ years. We have kept it open as long as we possibly could. We appreciate the many volunteers that helped raise money and construct Scramble Alley. We sent out a survey over a year ago and to our surprise, most people said it was time to tear it down. We have applied twice for the BCBST Playground Grant but have not been successful. We will continue to try to obtain funding as we explore options for the future. We looked at adding structures to Veterans’ Park recently and the cost to add one large structure and two small structures was approximately $120,000. We also looked at constructing an entirely new playground at Scramble Alley. The estimated cost was $350,000+. Currently, we are working with a consultant to create a new Parks and Recreation Master Plan. This is required to be able to obtain funding through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC). The City of Soddy-Daisy has funded over $500,000 in park improvements over the past 3 to 4 years. We have been able to perform this work exclusively with our Public Works Department. If we had to contract this work out, the cost would have been double. In a separate post, we will list the improvements that have been made. Please be patient with us as we move forward.”
