Senator Bo Watson Questions Whether Legalizing Marijuana Will Actually Do More Good Than Bad

CHATTANOOGA,TN, (WDEF)-Marijuana is now legal in more than 20 US states but remains a hazy issue in Tennessee.

State Senator Bo Watson,"Numerous authors have pointed out that our enthusiasm about it has gotten ahead of the research, there are still a lot of unanswered questions".

Since spring of 2015 Cannabis oil can be sold in the Volunteer State but only for medical purposes.

However Senator Bo Watson questions whether pushing forward with full legalization would do more damage than good.

"Every person is entitled to their opinion but they are not entitled to their own facts, we all need to take a step back and look at the facts around medical marijuana or recreational marijuana".

Addiction counselor Roger Helle believes the tax income from marijuana legalization hasn’t boosted Colorado or other state’s economies.

Roger Helle, Addiction Counselor, Teen Challenge,  "Legalizing marijuana has not produced the benefit that they think it would produce, there is also those consequences that they did not for see".

Helle feels marijuana is a gateway drug and encourages criminal behaviour.

"A few people might benefit from it and the consequences of all those are not going to benefit from it and it’s going to lead them into other addiction issues".

Senator Watson is calling for more medical journals and studies to be published on the drug before moving forward with legalization.

Cannabis oil is legal in Georgia and is used to treat 8 serious medical conditions.
