Sequatchie deputy detained suspect despite being shot twice

DUNLAP, Tenn (WDEF) – Tennessee Bureau of Investigation agents have arrested a suspect in the shooting of a Sequatchie County deputy Wednesday night.

It started as a chase around 9:45 PM near the intersection of Tram Trail Road and Highway 111 in Dunlap.

Investigators say the chase ended when 21 year old Shaun Michael Powers drove his vehicle into a ditch.

TBI agents say deputy Wallace Cunningham ordered him out of his car, but he did not comply.

The deputy says Powers brandished a gun so he fired a stun gun.

The two got into a fight and the deputy was shot twice.

Still he was able to detain Powers until other officers arrived.

Deputy Cunningham never fired his weapon.

He was flown to the hospital where he was treated and later released.

Powers faces a charge of Attempted First Degree Homicide.
