Sheriff Guy: Athens man charged in shooting of woman renting his property
UPDATE: Sheriff Joe Guy has now identified the victim as 60 year old Kathleen McKee.
ATHENS, Tenn. (WDEF) — An Athens man is facing charges after the fatal shooting of a woman who was renting his property, according to the McMinn County Sheriff.
The Sheriff’s Office says deputies were dispatched to the residence on County Road 652 around 7 p.m. Thursday after the female resident reported an argument between herself and her landlord.
The Sheriff’s Office says the landlord, 77-year-old Charles Ward, lived next door.
In a release, McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy says, “Deputies arrived soon afterward and made contact with Charles Ward at his residence. Deputies went to the other residence to check on the female, and it was there that deputies located her deceased body with an evident gunshot wound.”
The Sheriff says Ward was charged with 1st degree murder and remains in custody in the McMinn County Jail under a $200,000 bond.
The name of the victim has not yet been released.
