Sheriff’s Office lands grant to help them sanitize jail

CHATTANOOGA (WDEF) – The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has landed a state grant to help them battle Covid-19 cases at the jail.

They plan to use the $440,000 grant to buy new cleaning equipment and put in a new hospital grade air purification system at the Silverdale Detention Center.

While COVID-19 cases continue to decrease in many confinement facilities, the HCSO acknowledges that inmates are at increased risk of transmitting and spreading the COVID-19 virus due to their incarcerated status,” stated Sheriff Jim Hammond.

He notes studies that show one in five prisoners in the U.S. at this time last year had tested positive for Covid.

That’s far above the rate in the general public.

They say they don’t have any Covid cases right now at the jail.

But they have had a total of 47 positive tests among inmates so far.
