Smedley on Proposed Tax Increase
CHATTANOOGA, TN (WDEF-TV) – Hamilton county commissioner Sabrena Smedley told the Pachyderm Monday that she campaigned on the fact she would not raise taxes.
Smedley says that the request for a 40-cent tax increase by school superintendent Rick Smith is something she wants to study at length.
The request got a cold reception from the commission three weeks ago.
Some pointed out the schools had a sizable reserve fund.

SABRENA SMEDLEY, HAMILTON COUNTY COMMISSIONER
"I understand they do need to have money in their reserve just like we do..its not really something I’m focusing on. I’m looking at the current budget..I’m looking at the past 10 year history, I’m looking at how the budget has increased about 32 percent over the past 2 years while enrollment has only gone up 6 percent."
Commissioner Smedley says it’s also her belief that any tax increase should be preceded by a Senior Tax freeze as passed by the legislature in 2007, but never implemented in Hamilton county.
