Son charged with killing his father in Etowah

Investigators decided it wasn't a suicide after all

ETOWAH, Tenn. (WDEF) – At first, a shooting last week in Etowah looked like a suicide. But the sheriff now says it was a case of murder.

McMinn County deputies responded to the scene at a home on County Road 475 and found 68-year-old Roger Dillard dead from a gunshot wound on Thursday evening.

They found the gun “some distance” from the victim.

The man lived with his son.

And authorities also talked to someone who was outside at the time of the shooting and a next-door neighbor.

“Over the next several days, as the investigation progressed and an autopsy was performed, it became clear that the situation did not reflect that of a suicide,” said Sheriff Guy. “Rather, it became evident that Jason Dillard had fired the shot which resulted in the death of his father, Roger Dillard, during an argument they were having.”

Investigators arrested Jason Dillard on New Year’s Eve and charged him with criminal homicide in the second degree.
