Stay Alert During Severe Weather
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) It just so happens to be severe weather awareness week in Tennessee, and as if right on cue, we found ourselves with storms moving into the Tennessee Valley today …. When weather does hit the area, you never want to be caught off guard, and of course the best way to stay up to date is to flip to channel 12 and let Storm Team 12 tell you what you need to know! But you can’t always be parked in front of a TV, so you need to make sure you have the WDEF weather app on your phone set to alert you ….
“First, let’s get started. Allow it to use your current location to give you watches and warnings where you are at enable the severe weather alerts and allow it to send you weather alerts sounds, so it will make a noise when a new alert is issued done.”
If you aren’t a smart phone user, or your smart phone dies, there is always a weather radio like this one that News 12 has been giving out for the past few months. They are normally pretty easy to program, and you can find instructions on how to set this one up on WDEF.com under weather…..
Now, once you are setup, it is important to know what is being reported. One of the most commonly confused terms are watches and warnings…
“Warnings mean that severe weather is happening or will happen in just a period of minutes, so it is time to seek shelter. A watch means conditions are favorable for severe weather, so it is a time to be aware that things may change rapidly within the next 1 to 4 hours.”
When severe weather rolls into town, it’s not the time to realize that you aren’t prepared.
