Staying safe this Halloween

Walker County Sheriff offers valuable advice

Halloween is this Sunday, meaning trick-or-treaters will be out and about in the community.

No matter your plans for the holiday, being safe is of the utmost importance.

Children are three times more likely to be struck and killed by a car on Halloween than any other day of the year, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Walker County Sheriff Steve Wilson has some valuable advice for those trick-or-treating this weekend.

“We stress children need to be accompanied by adults in the community,” Wilson said. “Go to homes where you’re familiar with the neighborhood. Do not go to homes that you do not know the people.”

Sheriff Wilson also recommended additional safety measures.

These included taking flashlights along with you and making your costume more visible, using reflective duct tape or other similar materials.
