Summer Surge: Moving Weekend Tips

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – If you are planning a move, you are not alone.

This weekend is expected to be the busiest moving weekend of the entire year, with thousands of households packing up and heading to new homes.

From June 27 through 29, nearly 5,000 moves are expected to take place across the country.

That is over 15 million pounds of belongings being hauled and more than 700,000 miles logged… the equivalent of circling the globe nearly 30 times.

Local moving expert Katherine Mercer says planning ahead is key.

Start by booking your movers early, as summer dates fill up quickly.

Begin packing now with the items you use the least and label each box clearly.

Beat the heat by moving in the early morning and staying hydrated.

Wear light, breathable clothing and take breaks when needed.

Protect items like electronics, candles, and perishables from heat damage by keeping them out of hot vehicles.

If you can, prepare your new space in advance, and do not forget to update your address with utility companies and other essential services.

A little extra effort now can help you avoid big headaches later and make your summer move a whole lot smoother.
