Supermarket Guru For the Week of 11/17

I’m Phil Lempert with the New Product Hits & Misses.

First up, Amoretti Cookie Spread Cookies & Cream.

The idea here is to have a spread that I guess tastes similar to an Oreo. To be honest with you I’m not a fan. The spread itself which tastes more like the cookie part of an Oreo and is very chalky instead of very chocolatey – which is no surprise since the first ingredient is wheat flour – followed by sugar, canola oil, palm oil, honey and then finally unsweetened chocolate. Two tablespoons is 14 grams of fat and 7 grams of sugars. This is one product that perhaps you might enjoy putting on ice cream. There is so much room on the package to give you serving suggestions they should take advantage. Pass it by.  Retails for $5.95 for 12 oz.  Total score is 81.

Pop Secret Popcorn White Cheddar.

Yes run and hide, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back and even if you don’t see the movie they’re going to invade the supermarket aisles. This popcorn, which is white cheddar has a nice texture, is lower in sodium than most, but actually I don’t taste much of the white cheddar. Made with real cheddar cheese so I expected a lot more. One ounce is 150 calories, 10 grams of fat, 3 grams of protein and 220 mg of sodium. The one recommendation that I always give on flavored bag popcorn is turn the bag upside down and open it from the bottom, that way all those flavorings that are sitting there that settled during shipment will actually be on the top and filter through the rest of the popcorn. Shake the bag well before opening.  Retails for $3.49 for 5 oz.  Total score is 82.

Cheesewich Pepper Jack Cheese & Hard Salami is a Hit.

This was one of the hits of this past year’s Sweets and Snacks Expo. As more people are snacking and looking for higher protein snacks this is a perfect alternative. Think of it as a sandwich without the bread – just pepper jack cheese and hard salami both of which are terrific tasting. One Cheesewich is 270 calories but it does have 23 grams of fat, only 1 g of sugar and is loaded with 14 grams of protein. The flavor is just what you would expect  it to to be – delicious and indulgent. The only thing is remember that when you open the package you’re basically having a cheese sandwich without the bread, and holding it in your fingers.  Retails for $1.99 for 2.5 oz.  Total score is 85.

Lo Organolicious Real Fruit Blend Beverage Mango Mojito is the HIT OF THE WEEK.

This beverage which is 13% juice, just 35 calories and 7 grams of sugars is actually delicious. It has a slight effervescence, created by the combination of the mango, blue agave and pomegranate juice concentrates and is very refreshing. My one complaint is there’s a touch too much Stevia which gives it a slight aftertaste. For those people who are watching their glycemic index this is perfect as it has just a G.I. of 23. The bottle is also shaped to fit the palm of your hand unlike so many cans and bottles that are just trying too hard to be cute.  Retails for $2.99 for 10 oz.  Total Score is 91.
