Supermarket Guru Report for April 20th
These are actually made from real pear and grape juice concentrates and taste great – not overly sweet. 1 pouch is 90 calories, 45 mg of sodium, no fat and 10 grams of sugars. They are soft on the outside and when you chew them they release a liquid center. Of all the packages I opened, they all seem to clump up rather than be separate pieces. Contains 100% of the daily value for Vitamin C. Retails for $2.99 for 5.4 oz (6 packs). Total Score is 82.
Fiber One 90 Calorie Brownies Mint Fudge.
I was actually surprised how good this brownie tasted. It’s a moist, light nice chocolate flavor with a strong mint note. The consistency is more like a rich chocolate cake with peppermint chips inside than a brownie. But it is only 90 calories with 5 grams of fiber – that is 20% of the recommended daily value of fiber. Unfortunately it also has 8 grams of sugars. Very satisfying mouthfeel and flavor. Like to see them eliminate or replace the Yellow #5 and Blue #1 food color additives. Retails for $3.89 for 5.34 oz. (6 brownies) Total Scoreis 83.
Silver Spring Foods, Inc. Chipotle Ranch is a HIT.
This has one of the best and most flavorful chipotle burn I’ve had. Basically it’s a spicy, zippy, zesty ranch dressing with chipotle peppers and other spices. I would use this on salads, burgers, as a dip for veggies. Lots of ways. My only complaint is I do taste a hint of the soybean oil right before the spices take over. A 2 tablespoon portion is 100 calories, 10 grams of fat, 310 mg of sodium (which is a little higher than other ranch dressings) and 3 grams of sugars. Gluten free. Retails for $2.99 for 8.5 oz.
Suavva Merry Mango is a HIT.
This is one terrific beverage. Made from the pulp of cacao fruit, yes the same fruit who’s seeds make chocolate – but this tastes nothing like chocolate – it’s actually better. Unlike so many smoothies that are too thick, the consistency of this is more like juice. It is 100% juice – 140 calories per bottle with 32 grams of naturally occurring sugars with zero grams of fat. The mango puree adds a nice refreshing touch. The juice is cold pressed, rich in antioxidants and an excellent source of vitamin C. Only complaint is I would like to see the caffeine content of the cacao listed on the label. Retails for $3.99 for 10.5 fl oz. Total Score is 93.
Late July Clásico Tortilla Chips Bacon Habanero is my PICK OF THE WEEK.
I am one of those people who are so over bacon. Well I was until I tasted these chips. The bacon is not overpowering, but blends perfectly with the habanero flavor. The chips are light and crunchy. One of the best chips I’ve had Not dense and oily like others. 12 chips are about 130 calories, 7 grams of fat and only 160 mg of sodium. You can put guacamole or salsa verde or any topping on these – but don’t these are so good by themselves you will not want to cover over the flavor. I think the only accompaniment would be a margarita! Retails for $3.69 for 5.5 oz. Total Score is 95.
