Supermarket Guru Report for March 23rd
March is Frozen Food Month, so we are celebrating, and rating all frozen foods this week! These pieces of all white meat chicken breast are among the best I have ever had in a frozen meal; and just like the photo shows there are 4 good sized pieces – probably enough for lunch but not dinner. The basmati rice wasn’t aromatic at all and frankly not that flavorful. The sauce is medium spiced and delicious. Certified Halal with no artificial anything. One meal is 360 calories, 6 grams of sugars and 24 grams of protein. I would like to see the recipe a little spicier. Retails for $3.99 for 9 oz.
Mom Made Meatball Bites Chicken & Apple is a HIT.
These are perfect for kids AND for adults. Mini size meatballs made with chicken and a great dash of apple flavor. They suggest heating up in water, broth or sauce and I tested with water so I could evaluate the flavor of the meatballs themselves – and they are delicious. Cooked in the microwave for just under 90 seconds and the consistency was perfect. I could see eating these naturally with pasta, but by themselves as an appetizer, as a healthier "meatball" sandwich and about a hundred other ways. Your kids will never be bored. 10 meatballs, a little over 3 ounces, is just 140 calories, 4 grams of sugars and a whopping 15 grams of protein. I would like to see the sodium reduced a bit – while its only 210 mg per serving – they taste a little salty. Retails for $4.99 for 8 oz – (about 25 mini meatballs).
Brewla Bars Specialty Brewed Bars Craft Brewed Root Beer Float is a HIT.
This actually made me smile on the first bite! Made with organic whole milk and root beer soda it actually does taste like a root beer float, and I’m sure I tasted a bit of fizz on my tongue. One bar is only 40 calories with a half a gram of fat and 8 grams of sugars. It’s gluten and caffeine free and is a perfect satisfying treat. Summer is not that far away so head to the store and stock up now. Also contains 10% of the recommendation for calcium. I love their trademarked slogan – lick well, live well. Retails for $4.99 for 8.75 oz. (5 x 1.75 oz bars)
American Flatbread Thin & Crispy Pizza Cheese & Herb is my PICK OF THE WEEK.
This pizza is actually on a flatbread crust that is made with 100% organically grown wheat with a three cheese topping of mozzarella, Blythedale Farms from Vermont Asiago and Grana Padano Cheese, which is one of Italy’s most popular cheeses which is a semifat hard cheese which is aged at least 9 months – the blend of these 3 cheeses is perfect! The extra virgin olive oil is flavorful and drips the way it should off a pizza. Typically I like my pizzas with tomato sauce, but this one is the exception – it is so good. All the cheeses are free of growth hormones. One third of the pizza, about 4.5 ounces, is 370 calories, 15 grams of fat, and 19 grams of sugars. The one downside is it also has 850 mg of sodium. Bake for 6-7 minutes ofr a softer crust – 8 for a crisp one – but don’t over bake as the crust will be too crisp and dry. Mange! Retails for $7.99 for 13.8 oz.
