Supermarket Guru Report for May 18th

Coconut Dream Non-Dairy Yogurt is a MISS.
Yes, coconut everything is hot. So I was excited to try this new coconut yogurt. Not so much after one taste. The color of the yogurt is somewhere between white and gray (yes, unappetizing at best) and when stirring (they suggest stirring "well") is very gelatinous – but those are not the turn offs. It’s the taste that needs a lot of work. An almost beauty lotion or chemical taste overpowers the hint of coconut and makes this product one to avoid. There are other dairy-free yogurts on the market that are much better. One container is 120 calories, 4 grams of fat and 14 grams of sugars – and that’s in their plain flavor! They do list the active bacteria by name. Good idea – bad recipe. Retails for $1.69 for 6 oz. Total Score is 70.

Hidden Valley Ranch Roasted Garlic
I really like the taste of this new flavored ranch. In fact, they have done a great job on the entire flavored line. Almost. They have the taste right – but – MSG? disodium inosinate? disodium gulanylate? calcium disodium EDTA? Come on…clean up those ingredients! 2 tablespoons 100 calories, 11 grams of fat, 210 mg of sodium. Please! We love our ranch! Retails for $3.59 for 16 oz. Total Score is 84.

Red’s Natural Foods Burrito Bowl Chicken is a HIT.
This is a really good mainstay product to have in your freezer. All the ingredients are good. Chicken without antibiotics. Grains, beans, veggies. All good. Just 380 calories, 15 grams of fat and 16 grams of protein. Sodium is high at 610 mg and you can actually taste that it is a bit too salty. My problem with the taste is there really is no outstanding flavor profile. You’ll need to add some hot sauce or other spices to give it a zip. My recommendation is if you don’t want to change the recipe, add a spice pack so people can add to taste. Retails for $4.99 for 8.5 oz. Total Score is 85.

Bibigo Gochujang Spicy & Sweet is a HIT.
I really really like this sauce. The flavor and balance of hot and sweet is perfect. Just the right burn and not too sweet tasting, although there is 10 grams of sugars in 2 tablespoons. I would love to add to vegetables and seafood. This is so much more complex of a flavor than Sirracha for example. 60 calories, zero fat. Imported from South Korea. Worth a try, in spite of the high sugar content. Retails for $4.99 for 11.46 oz. Total score is 88.
