Survey opens on English standards for Tennessee students
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF)- Tennessee parents and teachers have the opportunity to voice their opinions on what future education standards should be.
The Tennessee State Board of Education created the survey asking for feedback on existing standards for English and Language Arts.
Most grades have dozens to sometimes over a hundred different standards must meet for a particular grade level.
Education advocates say that this survey is an important opportunity for teachers and parents to call for a simplification to the process.
JC Bowman of the Professional Educators of Tennessee said, “The curriculum is really where we hear the most disagreements and people getting upset with something that is getting thrown into the curriculum, and what you think is that the tests would measure all 157 standards or whatever, but really it’s only testing 40 standards, and then the next test would measure another 40, and the one after that, there’s no consistency in it.”
