Suspect in custody after placing Walker Co. Schools on lockdown

WALKER COUNTY, Ga. (WDEF) – Four local schools in Rossville were on lockdown this afternoon while police attempted to apprehend a suspect who ran from officers.

Sheriff Wilson says it started when deputies conducted a traffic stop outside of Rossville, and realized the person had multiple traffic violations.

While they were in the process of arresting him, Sheriff Wilson says he tried to assault officers and ran off.

Nearby schools, including Stone Creek Elementary, Rossville Elementary, Ridgeland Middle and Ridgeland High, were all placed on a precautionary lockdown until the suspect was taken into custody.

25-year-old Sharik Smith was found in a commercial storage building. Smith has now been arrested, and faces two felony counts of obstruction of law enforcement officers.

Two officers involved in the incident were left with some minor bruising.
