TBI called in for Grundy County shooting investigation where 4 people were shot, 1 killed
ALTAMONT, Tenn. (WDEF)- Sheriff Shrum has identified the third victim in the Sunday night shooting in Altamont.
38 year old Christopher Gary Hurst from Bridgeport, Alabama was shot and wounded.
Hurst is an acquaintance the suspected shooter’s wife.
Sheriff Shrum says both Hurst and Jerone Powell have undergone surgery at area hospitals.
Powell is critical condition.
The suspect, John Wesley Smith is in fair condition.
Sheriff Shrum says there were six children were inside the residence when the shooting occurred.
The Grundy County Sheriff’s Office says they responded to SR-56 in Altamont where they found 4 shooting victims.
The shooter was still on scene, according to the Sheriff.
Deputies says they immediately took 37-year-old John Wesley Smith into custody.
EMS was called for the victims, which included the homeowner, 50-year-old Jerone Powell and the shooter’s wife 32-year-old, Carolyn Nicole Powell.
Powell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another male was also shot, but cannot be identified until the family is notified.
The shooter and the two male victims were transported to area hospitals.
Sheriff Shrum says it appears to be a domestic related incident between the shooter, his wife Nicole Powell and the unidentified victim.
The Sheriff says Smith is from Marion County and has a lengthy criminal history.
Sheriff Shrum has requested assistance from the District Attorney’s Office and the Tennessee Bureau of investigation

The paper is reporting that the call was domestic and it began when a man went into a home in Altamont and found his wife with another man.
The paper says the wife and the other man attempted to leave the home and were shot by the husband.
The woman’s father shot the husband, keeping him from continuing to fire, however the father was also shot, according to the paper.
The paper is reporting that the 32 year old woman was killed.
The Sheriff tells News 12 that the shooter in custody, was shot in the head by the homeowner.
The Sheriff told the paper that they are actively investigating and they have called in the TBI for assistance.
No identities have been released.
