TBI investigating officer involved shooting in Meigs County


The Meigs County Sheriff says the call involved a woman who called to say her son was shooting a gun in the basement.

He had a history of mental illness and was off his medication.

The Sheriff says John Eaves, Jr. greeted the deputy at the door and said he had a gun in his pocket, then pulled it out and fired at the deputy.

The deputy returned fire, wounding Eaves.

Investigators found that he had been threatening his mother, so they are charging him with with attempted second degree murder and aggravated domestic assault.


DECATUR, Tennessee (WDEF) – The TBI will investigate the shooting of a man Thursday evening by a Meigs County deputy.

The deputy was called to check on the welfare of a woman at a home on Nopone Valley road near the Hiwassee River and the Hamilton County line.

The TBI says the deputy found a man with a gun who fired several shots at him.

The deputy returned fire, hitting 55 year old John Eaves, Jr.

Eaves was taken to the hospital.

The deputy was not hurt.
