TBI says police officer was probably hit by “friendly fire”

KNOXVILLE (WDEF) – The TBI has issued a new report on the school shooting in Knoxville this week.

The original version was that an armed student fired on police when they confronted him in the restroom at Austin East High School.

But the TBI report out on Wednesday says the police officer was NOT actually shot by the student’s gun.

The revised report says the student’s gun did fire after a struggle.

But now they say two officers fired back. And the implication is that one of those shots hit the other officer.

The 17 year old student was killed.

The police officer did undergo surgery, but is expected to make a full recovery.
