Tennessee Ancient Sites Conservancy Unveils New Historical Marker for Chickamauga Mound

CHATTANOOGA,TN(WDEF) The Tennessee Ancient Sites Conservancy recently unveiled a new state historical marker for the Chickamauga Mound, a site dating back to the Woodland period. This monumental mound has long been a focus of preservation efforts by the Chattanooga InterTribal Association, and the new marker ensures its historical significance will be remembered for generations to come.

Tom Kunesh, President of the Tennessee Ancient Sites Conservancy, shared his enthusiasm for the preservation work, saying, “A group has been helping us conserve the mound, preserving it and cleaning it off. It used to be just a big ball of privet, but now we’ve cleared all the privet and are working to restore the mound to its original form. We’re now planting grass to make it beautiful again, just as it might have been over 2,000 years ago.”

The unveiling of the historical marker marks a significant step in the ongoing efforts to protect and honor the Chickamauga Mound, ensuring its rich history remains a point of pride for the community and a valuable resource for future generations.
