Tennessee Football All Stars Excited For Their Annual Gridiron Showdown With Georgia
Chattanooga, TN (WDEF) – It’s the 13th annual Tennessee-Georgia Gridiron classic Saturday night at Chattanooga Christian.
Tennessee has a 9-3 record in the local all-star football game, and they’re anxious to try and get their tenth win in this summer time series.
Learning you’ve been named an all-star is a something that never gets old.
Said East Hamilton linebacker Michael Bush-“Once I got that call, I got kind of excited and started the training.”
Added Soddy Daisy lineman Grant Cordell-“I was downstairs watching TV. He called me. Definitely got the butterflies going knowing that I got a chance to play another game.”
Said Tennessee head coach Jason Fitzgerald-“These 37 guys we got, they love the game because there were a few we asked that didn’t want to play. These guys out here right now are just having a good time.”
It’s been awhile since most of these guys have played football, so there is a brief adjustment period.
Said Cordell-“The first day definitely. You put on a helmet. A little bit different weight. Your neck starts cramping up a little bit.”
But there are never any cramps when it comes to hitting.
Said Fitzgerald-“Sometimes we have to tone it down a little bit. Tell the guys to tone it down, especially the first night when we were just in helmets. We really had to tone that down. Coach (Wayne) Turner’s guys out here from Tyner, they want to go full speed all the time.”
It’s hard to tone down the enthusiasm when you’re playing alongside so many talented athletes.
Said Sequatchie Co quarterback Houston Mainord-“Especially being on a team with so many athletes. It’s just crazy.”
Reporter-“How cool is it to have your name on the same roster as so many talented, local kids.”
Said Bush-“It really is kind of good. Makes me feel good. Makes me want to train harder and everything.”
With just a week of practice, hard to really jell as an offense, so the defense will have a few restraints on Saturday night.
Said Fitzgerald-“Well, you’ve got certain rules. You can only rush four at a time. They kind of limit you on defense, so you can get some semblance of offense going.”
The Tennessee-Georgia Gridiron Classic will kick at 7:30pm.
