Tennessee ranks 8th worst in nation for dangerous drivers
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) – A new Consumer Affairs analysis of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows Tennessee ranks among the worst states in the country for dangerous drivers.
According to the data, Tennessee ranks eighth nationwide for the worst drivers across all age groups.
Experts explain that while dangerous driving cannot be attributed to just one generation, one age group stands out significantly above the rest.
Dayna Edens, Public Relations and Outreach Manager, says older generations often receive the blame.
“Baby boomers get a bad reputation, like our grandparents get a bad reputation for being the most dangerous behind the wheel, maybe because they’re driving the slowest,” Edens said.
She expands on that perception, noting that the numbers tell a different story when examined more closely.
“But when you actually look at it nationwide and for Tennessee, we see those younger drivers, just getting their driver’s license and that are a couple years into driving, are actually the deadliest,” Edens explained.
The data highlights a troubling trend among Generation Z drivers.
While Tennessee became a hands-free state in 2019, prohibiting drivers from holding a cellphone or mobile device in an effort to reduce distracted driving crashes, younger drivers remain disproportionately involved in fatal accidents.
In fact, Gen Z drivers in Tennessee are involved in crash fatalities at twice the national rate.
Officials say the findings underscore the need for continued education, enforcement, and awareness efforts aimed at young drivers, as the state works to make its roads safer for everyone.
