Tennessee sets new execution date for Harold Wayne Nichols

He was sentenced to die for raping and killing a Chattanooga woman in 1988

NASHVILLE (WDEF) – The State of Tennessee has set a new execution date for convicted killer Harold Wayne Nichols of Chattanooga.

The new date is June 9, 2022.

He was convicted of raping and murdering Karen Pulley in 1988.

Nichols was also convicted of 5 other rapes in the Chattanooga area.

This afternoon, Pulley’s mother in law said the Governor’s office called to inform the family personally.

She says she is 75 years old and wants to see the execution before she dies.

Nichols was close to execution last year, but Covid intervened.

Governor Bill Lee issued a stay just two weeks before as the state postponed all executions.

The concern at the time was for the health of  prison officials and witnesses.

The Tennessee Supreme Court today set new execution dates for two death row cases.

Oscar Franklin Smith will be the first to be executed in April for a triple murder in 1989 in Nashville.
