Three bills passed that could impact locals

This has already been a busy week for Tennessee lawmakers.

The state House passed a bill banning kratom sponsored by East Brainerd Representative Esther Helton Haynes.

He bill is named for Matthew Davenport from Chattanooga who died from an interaction between the drug and other prescribed medications.

Critics call kratom “gas station heroin.”

It comes from a tropical tree in Southeast Asia and is marketed as a natural supplement.

The bill goes to the state Senate tomorrow.

The House has also passed the Charlie Kirk Act.

The bill requires public schools to adopt a policy on freedom of expression, in honor of Kirk.

It now goes to the Governor’s desk.

The Senate has also passed a couple of bills requiring local sheriff’s to hold inmates wanted by ICE for 48 hours.

Critics say the bills push new costs onto local Sheriff’s Offices.
