Tips to Prepare for Cold Winter Weather

The USAA is providing tips locals can use to prepare for winter weather that could take place.

They say the following could help during impactful times:

Prepare your home

  • Seal drafts and insulate – check doors, windows, attics and roof to keep cold air and water out, and heat in
  • Protect pipes – insulate exposed pipes and consider letting faucets drip
  • Clear Walkways and roof edges – remove ice and snow where you can safely do so, to prevent slips and structural damage.

Stock Essential Supplies

  • Emergency Kit – include flashlights, extra batteries, a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio, first-aid items, and a manual can-opener
  • Food & Water – have at least a few days’ worth of non-perishable food, water, and necessary medications on hand in case travel is unsafe
  • Keep Devices Charged – fully charge phones, power banks, and other electronics ahead of potential outages

Stay Safe with Heat and Power

  • Plan for Outages in Your Area – winter storms often disrupt electricity; only use approved generators outdoors and away from the home
  • Carbon Monoxide Safety – test CO detectors and never use ovens or grills to heat your home
  • Space Heaters and Fireplaces – keep anything that can catch fire at least three feet away from heat sources

If You MUST Travel

  • Winter Vehicle Kit – include warm blankets, water, snacks, flashlight, and basic tools in your car
  • Let Someone Know Your Plans – share your route and estimated arrival time with someone you trust

Look out for Others

  • Stay in touch with friends and neighbors, especially older adults who may need assistance clearing walkways or attaining food
  • Bring pets indoors and provide extra food, water and warm shelter
