Troy Attempts Record 99 Shots in Losing to the Lady Vols

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Alexa Middleton scored a career-high 29 points while starting in place of the injured Diamond DeShields on Wednesday as Tennessee breezed to a 110-84 victory over Troy.

DeShields hurt her right thumb Dec. 14 in a victory over Appalachian State but played through the injury Sunday as the Lady Volunteers defeated No. 14 Stanford. DeShields wore a cast to protect the thumb Wednesday.

Tennessee coach Holly Warlick said after Wednesday’s game that DeShields is “absolutely fine.” Warlick said she’d decided after the Stanford game to rest DeShields against Troy. Warlick was noncommittal on whether DeShields would play Dec. 29 against UNC Wilmington.

Jaime Nared had 21 points and 14 rebounds for Tennessee (7-4). Mercedes Russell added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Meme Jackson also scored 18. Jordan Reynolds had 12 points, 13 assists and eight rebounds.

Troy’s 99 field-goal attempts were the most ever by a Tennessee opponent.
