Twiggy, the water skiing squirrel, splashes her way to the Fried Pickle Festival

Shannon Wright joins News 12’s Amelia Greer to preview the Fried Pickle Festival and brought some friends, “Twiggy the Water Skiing Squirrel.”

DALTON, Ga. (WDEF) – The Fried Pickle Festival promises tons of fried pickles, family fun, and furry critters with a knack for water sports.

The North Georgia Fairgrounds in Dalton, GA welcomes Touch the Sky Events’ annual Fried Pickle Festival. The festival will feature 180 craft and commercial vendors, 30 food vendors for everyone’s fried pickles needs, games, rides, and a petting zoo.

One talented pet is making a splash at the fairgrounds, and it’s Twiggy, the water skiing squirrel. The famous squirrel, known for her jaw-dropping abilities and acting credits in Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004), will be performing for festival goers.

The idea of putting a squirrel on a water ski sounds like a joke, and that’s because the idea started out as one. Chuck Best, Twiggy’s Dad, says it started out when his father bought his sister a little boat for her birthday. His father was made fun of for playing with the boat and said he’s using it to teach his pet squirrel how to water ski. The squirrel became an overnight sensation and now Twiggy travels around the U.S. and the world to show off her water skiing talents.

After the death of Best’s father from a boating accident, Twiggy now wears a life jacket during her performances and became a spokesperson for boat safety. Her performances aren’t just for entertainment, but an opportunity to educate people about year-round water safety.

The Fried Pickle Festival is on October 5 from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. and October 6 from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M. There will be a $5 admission fee, which guarantees access to all the vendors and Twiggy.
