Two city contractors injured in manhole fire

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (WDEF) — The Chattanooga Fire Department were called to the 3800 block of Amnicola Highway for a confined space explosion.

Chattanooga Fire Captain Robert Thompson with the Special Operations division said two men were in a manhole doing work on the sewer line when a flash fire broke out.

Fire officials say both men were able to get out of the manhole and call for help.

According to Chattanooga Fire, the fire was out when firefighters arrived.

The fire department says one man was suffering from second degree burns and was taken to a local hospital while the other had minor burns.

Chattanooga Fire says the workers are from SpectraShield, a subcontractor for the City of Chattanooga.

Captain Thompson said officials are still working to determine the cause of the flash fire.

The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration (TOSHA) will also be investigating.
