Two Found Safe After Jumping into Tennessee River Overnight

According to Chattanooga P.I.O. Nathan Hartwig:

At approximately 8:30 a.m., Investigators with the Chattanooga Police Department’s Missing Persons Unit located the female that had jumped into the river at 100 Riverfront Parkway. She has been identified as 27 year-old Ashley Smart, who was found at her residence, unharmed. Smart had made it to shore and left the scene without notifying the officers. The male party, that was rescued earlier this morning by Chattanooga Patrol Officers, has been identified as 40 year-old William Toner. Toner had no injuries and was taken to Hamilton County Jail on charges of Public Intoxication and Reckless Endangerment.

Upate:

A man and a woman jumped into the river near the Market Street Bridge this morning after they had reportedly been out drinking at a local establishment.
Rescue crews found the man and charged him with public intoxication.
But Chattanooga Police Chief Bobby Dodd says the missing woman was found early Wednesday – at her home.
Apparently she swam to shore – across the river from Police.
Chief Dodd says that could have been to evade public intoxication charges.
But Dodd says the two may still have to pay for all the effort police spent trying to search for and save them.
Bobby Dodd, Chattanooga Police Chief, "We’re looking at right now, what the cost of the rescue effort will be. We’ll get with search and rescue with Hamilton County, the fire department and find out what those costs are and I’m certainly willing to go forward and either charge them or make them responsible for the costs that we’ve expended at this point."
Chief Dodd says the entire area along the Riverfront is a no swim zone.

Chattanooga Police issued this release: at 1:10 a.m. Chattanooga Police responded to a Water Rescue at 100 Riverfront Parkway, under the Market Street Bridge.  A Russell Security Guard reported that an adult man and woman had jumped into the river and appeared to be struggling to get back to shore.  Officers arrived and both victims were still in the water.  The male was in the middle of the river, so with the aid of a private citizen, they took a boat out and rescued him.  The female went under the water before they were able to reach her.  Hamilton County Rescue arrived with their boat and sonar, but they were not able to locate her.
