University of Georgia aims to raise $1.2 billion

ATLANTA (AP) – The University of Georgia has received what it calls the largest single gift ever received by the school – a $30 million donation from the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation.

The university announced the gift this week, as it launched its Commit to Georgia Campaign.

University officials announced a goal of $1.2 billion for the campaign.

The university said in a statement that a commitment to students is at the center of the fundraising effort, and that a key goal is to eliminate financial barriers by increasing support for merit- and need-based financial aid.

The Woodruff Foundation, inspired by the late Coca-Cola Co. leader Robert Winship Woodruff, seeks to improve quality of life in Georgia by investing in health, education, economic opportunity and community vitality, according to its website.
