UPDATE: GSP Trooper shot on I-75 South near Atlanta

LATEST UPDATE: The Georgia Department of Public Safety say Trooper Fields is out of surgery and expected to make a full recovery.

GDOT says the left and middle 4 lanes of 6 are still blocked on I-75 South, but it’s expected to be cleared up around 11 p.m. Wednesday.


LATEST: The Georgia Department of Public Safety releases the name of the trooper shot Wednesday near Atlanta.

GSP TFC Jacob Fields was shot during a pursuit on I-75 South.

He’s currently in surgery.

He was injured in abdomen and lower leg.



MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) – Authorities say a Georgia state trooper was shot in a police chase in suburban Atlanta.

The Georgia State Patrol department said in an email that the trooper and a suspect were shot in the pursuit Wednesday afternoon on Interstate 75 in Marietta.

The trooper and suspect were taken to WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Their conditions were unknown but Jen Talaber, a spokeswoman for Gov. Nathan Deal, says the trooper was conscious. The names of the two have not been released.

Marietta Police spokeswoman Brittany Wallace says the shooting caused all but two lanes of the busy highway to shut down.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it will continue to investigate the shooting.


Atlanta, GA (WDEF) – Georgia Department of Public Safety confirms a Georgia State Patrol Trooper has been shot while in a pursuit on I-75 South in Marietta.

Both the trooper and the suspect have been taken to the hospital.

GDOT reports all lanes of I-75 South before Delk Road are blocked along with 2 northbound lanes.
