Update: Meigs County Wreck

DECATUR, Tenn. (WDEF) – Officials are looking for a driver involved in a violent crash in Meigs county this afternoon that killed four people.

The incident happened near the Shaw Plant on Highway 58 around 2:30 p.m.

The Meigs County Dispatcher says the wreck involved two passenger vehicles following a dump truck.

Lt. John Harmon of the Tennessee Highway Patrol said the fatal wreck happened when a trailer being towed by the dump truck traveling south on Highway 58 evidently disconnected and struck the other two vehicles traveling in the opposite direction (North Bound.)

Samantha Norris, 37, from Maynardville and Andrew Blackford, 38, of Murfreesboro, in addition Christopher Denton, 36,  and Paula Stevens, 62, both from Dunlap, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials tell us one of the drivers was 34 year old John Bennett of Decatur. He is considered a person of interest.


Authorities say Bennett ran into the nearby woods after the crash..

They say he was driving on a suspended license.
