Urban League of Chattanooga is offering free tax services

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn (WDEF) – We are now in tax season, even though  the IRS delayed the start date this year until February 15th.

It’s called the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program or VITA

The Urban League of Chattanooga is offering to file your taxes for free, if your annual salary is less than $58,000.

“If we go back to 2019, we have served over 11,000 tax payers. That’s a big savings for them because they really cannot afford to pay people to do it. This year because of Covid everything has been more difficult because we cannot be face to face,” says Val Palmer, VITA regional Coordinator.

The Urban League says this year the free service has gone virtual-in order to meet Covid-19 guidelines.

“Everyone will need to come to the location they are assigned when they call the hotline. Then they have to stay in their car ,wear a mask and have a pen. Then we come out to the parking lot, collect their information. We then let them go back home. Within 2 weeks later we have their return prepared,” says Palmer.

Officials ask those who want to sign up for the program to be patient-as their hotline is already becoming overwhelmed.
