UT Chancellor Jimmy Cheek is stepping down
KNOXVILLE (WDEF) – The University of Tennessee announces that Chancellor Jimmy Cheek has decided to resign his position and rejoin the faculty.
Cheek said at a press conference this morning that his daughter convinced him to step down.
He says he isn’t ready to retire, but he wants to scale back.
Cheek says his run-ins with lawmakers over the UT Diversity Office had nothing to do with his decision.
University President Jo DiPietro says Cheek has served UT well.
He lists fundraising, new construction and improved relations with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory as Cheek’s top accomplishments.
The Board of Trustees will begin searching for a new chancellor later this month.
DiPietro expects to have a new Chancellor by spring of next year.
